2014 Portrait Recap

I absolutely love portrait sessions. Whether engagement, senior, or styled shoots….they’re just so much fun and allow me to slow down a little and think creatively. And it’s always fun to look back on some of my favorite images from the past year. So here’s a little round-up from 2014!

Wardrobe Wednesday | Maternity Vintage Skirt Style

In the early stages of pregnancy, it’s great to still be able to wear a lot of my normal clothes. When I came across this photo on Pinterest, I loved seeing that higher waisted skirts could still work as they left plenty of room for the little growing bump, and as I have a pretty good supply of vintage skirts that are higher waisted, I enjoyed creating an outfit to replicate this look.

2014 Goals: Recap

So, I’m in the process of working on 2015 year-long goals, and I can’t wait to share them soon! But before doing that, I think it only seems right to review how things went with the goals I set for last year. I’m all about being honest when it comes to this because it can be easy to be intimidated by everyone setting all of these wonderful goals at the beginning of the year, but the reality is that sometimes they don’t all get accomplished and that’s ok. They were still a stepping stone toward progress and a tool in being more intentional than I would have been had I not written them out. So in that sense, I think setting goals is a helpful thing regardless of the perfection of the outcome. But it’s obviously super helpful to know what worked and didn’t work, and what got accomplished and what didn’t when setting out to make another list for the New Year. So, let’s take a look:

PERSONAL

Overall objective: Better self-discipline established and new habits formed in my daily routine, so as to better serve and care for others.

  • Finish reading 1000 Gifts and complete my own list of 1000 things
  • Establish and implement a better system for organizing clothes, and keeping them put away
  • Establish and implement a cleaning schedule to more consistently keep all parts of the house clean
  • Step into a more intentional role of serving/ministry at my church
  • Connect with our neighbors on a more regular basis
  • Talk with family across the country weekly
  • Read at least 4 books (I read two completely, and started two others….so that’s almost close! Haha)
  • Work out at least 3 times a week, whenever not traveling
  • Establish a way that works well for both Aaron & I to maintain a more consistent household budget
  • Continue making our house a home and filling it with elements that make it “us”

Some of these I really made progress on at different points, but never got to the place of having a solid, consistent system really put in place. I’m encouraged that progress was still made, though, and I will continue to focus on improving those areas this next year.

BUSINESS

Overall objective: Streamlining business practices to improve consistency and efficiency  all across the board, so as to better serve and “wow” my clients, and achieve things that have been falling through the cracks.

  • Learn about and open an IRA account (Started this, but didn’t get very far…)
  • Create a 5-year vision for my business and a schedule for when/how to increase rates
  • Establish and implement a more organized weekly work schedule
  • Establish and implement a monthly Duty Day
  • Create a more organized schedule for blogging
  • Blog full weddings more consistently
  • Establish a workflow for submitting weddings to be featured consistently
  • Establish and implement a better system for getting photos to vendors
  • Finish decorating my office
  • Design & order 2 new sample albums (Decided this didn’t really need to be a priority because I conduct most meetings online, now.)
  • Get published in a respected print publication (This was halfway accomplished as I did have some photos published in print, but not an entire wedding or shoot which was the ultimate goal)

While I may not have gotten as much accomplished on this list as I wanted, I DID accomplish several important things for my business that I didn’t even know I’d want or need to do at the beginning of the year. Those things include:

  • A complete rebrand (that will be launching next week!)
  • Outsourcing album design
  • Outsourcing editing
  • Hiring an office assistant
  • Re-thinking & streamlining products & client gifts

Those accomplishments were huge, and turned out to be in the perfect timing as they helped get my business more streamlined and efficient which will be so important when Baby arrives. So, I’m really glad they happened even if it meant some of the other stuff on my original list didn’t.

So, how about you? What were the most important things you accomplished in 2014, and what do you hope to work harder on in 2015?

Baby Bump | Weeks 17 & 18

I’m so grateful to be feeling good in my second trimester, as that made the holidays so much more enjoyable. I was really nauseous in the first trimester which fell during our Thanksgiving celebration with Aaron’s family, and it was really rough. Always a bummer not to be able to enjoy all the good food! So here are the photo updates from the last two weeks:

Baby Bump Photo Update_0001

A few notable things:

– Working out has been going well (though I definitely get winded faster and am avoiding certain moves because they feel awkward) and I’m enjoying feeling active again, even if it’s to a lesser degree than before
– Not really feeling normal coffee these days, but have been enjoying lattes immensely. And considering Aaron got me an espresso maker for Christmas, I’ll be enjoying my fair share of decaf lattes from home which will be fabulous. (Even found decaf chai concentrate, so I’m set!)
– Started using a support pillow for sleeping last week. I’m still sleeping great, overall, but can find it hard to get comfortable initially.
– Really motivated to start decorating Baby’s nursery and have spent a good amount of time browsing Pinterest to get ideas for what type of furniture we’ll want, etc. We find out the gender at the end of the month, so once that happens it’s game on!

Things are continuing to go well, and I’m so grateful for a healthy, uncomplicated pregnancy thus far, and pray it continues that way! Thanks for all of your support and interest as we walk this journey. :)

2014 Behind The Scenes

It’s crazy that we’re already into the SECOND day of 2015! New years always come around so quickly, and I can never get all of my recapping and goal-setting done before the 1st. But, as per usual, I enjoy taking the month of January to continue looking back on the accomplishments of the previous year, and taking my time to really cast my vision for the New Year. So, that’s what I’ll be doing the next couple weeks!

Today, I thought it would be fitting to show some behind-the-scenes shots from this past year. Truthfully, I never think to take shots like this during a wedding day, so I’m grateful for 2nd shooters who do, as it’s always fun to see a few glimpses of me doing what I love.

It’s always great to be able to use 2nd shooters for test shots when looking for portrait and getting ready locations…and these two model well. ;)

2014 really was a fantastic year, with SO many wonderful weddings. A huge, huge thank you to everyone who assisted or 2nd shot for me at one or more weddings: Kaytee, Lauryn, Bradley, Jen, Hollie, Laura, and Hannah. I couldn’t have done it without you!

And just for fun, here are a few Instagram behind-the-scenes, as well! Lovvved getting to work with some of my favorite vendor friends on some beautiful styled shoots, and can’t wait to do more of that this year! Shout out to Amelia & Kelsey of Tart Event Co, Janie Medley, the ladies of Elle Style Studio, Paisley & Jade, Caroline of PoshPR, the ladies at Tiffany’s Bridal and Fete Studio, to name a few.
